In almost all the prestigious engineering colleges and
universities providing specialization in civil engineering, students are required
to prepare civil engineering project reports in almost every semester. If not
this frequently, all civil engineers need to submit at least one Project Report
in four years of engineering.
Writing a report for your civil engineering project is not
that difficult but it can be tricky if the student is doing it for the first
time. But once the students have done it for a couple of times, it becomes easy
as well as interesting job to prepare and produce a civil engineering project
report.
To write an effective project report you need to understand
different levels of Project Reports to start with. Here is an overview of the
process of writing effective Civil Engineering Projects’ Reports:
1) Title Page
The first page of your Civil Engineering Project should cover the title. This page also contains your name,
your guide’s name and your college/institute’s name. Do not forget to include:
“IN PARTIAL
FULFILMENT OF THE AWARD OF BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B.TECH) IN CIVIL
ENGINEERING”
Note - If the report is just a regular
report and not specially a training report, you needn’t write this statement.
Following are the components of a good Civil Engineering
Project report:
·
Project Report
TITLE OF YOUR PROJECT
·
Submitted by
YOUR NAME
YOUR ROLL NUMBER OR STUDENT ID
·
Under The Guidance of
YOUR GUIDE/GUIDES’ NAME
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY/INSTITUTE NAME
MONTH AND YEAR OF THE CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECT REPORT
SUBMISSION
The formatting should be done to customize the template of
the project report. Attach your university logo and similar stuff.
2) Declaration
This page in your Civil Engineering Project reports is like
an affidavit wherein you certify that you have done this project under a
particular guide during so and so date in a particular year and engineering
batch. Following is the format of the declaration:
I hereby declare that the project report entitled, “TITLE OF
YOUR CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECT”, is an authentic record of my original work carried
out at “YOUR COLLEGE/INSTITUTE/UNIVERSITY NAME” as required in partial
fulfillment of the semester for the award of degree of B.E. (Civil
Engineering), under the guidance of ” YOUR GUIDE/GUIDES
NAME”, during “BATCH”).
Date: __________
Signature: __________
It is certified that the above statement made by “YOUR NAME”
is correct to the best of our knowledge and belief.
YOUR GUIDE/GUIDES’ SIGNATURE
YOUR GUIDE/GUIDES’ NAME
GUIDE/GUIDES’ DESIGNATION
YOUR COLLEGE/INSTITUTE UNIVERSITY NAME
3. Acknowledgment
Acknowledgment is added so that you can add a thank you note
for all who supported you in your project work. This section is not limited to thanking
the guide; you can also mention friends, family members or any other person who
directly or indirectly helped you in your project report. If your project is
funded by any organization or government, you also need to thank them for the
grant.
4. Abstract
Abstract of your project report should contain the gist of
your entire civil engineering project. While writing abstract, put special
emphasis on important keywords, your methodology, used tools, your findings and
conclusions. Abstract is like a compact summary of your entire report and concerned
people will just read the abstract part to get information about your submitted
project.
5. Table of Contents
Include a detailed table of content in your civil
engineering project for easy navigation. Your table of content should actually be
detailed in information and not just the main headings of your Project Work. It
should include the sections and sub-sections of your report listed along with
page numbers.
You also need to list all the tables, diagrams, figures and
abbreviations etc. These items should be added on the next page after table of
contents.
6.
References/Bibliography
It is very important to include ‘References/Bibliography’ in
your project. This is to list the references you used while writing your civil
engineering project report. You just need to join some engineering forums for discussion to increase your knowledge about projects report.
When citing from books you should include Book Title,
Author’s name, Name and Year of publication along with page numbers.
I hope after going through these steps on “How to Write Civil Engineering Projects’ Report?”,
you are no longer afraid of writing a Civil Engineering Project Report.
